Duong’s is a local-favorite vendor that sells Vietnamese sandwiches and iced coffee during breakfast and lunch time. Run by a 50-year-old auntie, the vendor attracts working class customers, students, and tourists who stop by for an authentic taste of Vietnam with reasonable pricing. Yet, the owner’s daughter, who usually helps her out, complains to me about the current order-taking and payment process: cash-based, unautomated, unsafe (especially when her mom has to manage everything when she’s at school). This leads to daily long lines, order errors, and challenges in keeping track of inventory levels. With that in mind, this case study presents my design solution to enhance the overall customer experience and improve the vendor’s operational efficiency.
